Arpita Saha

Junior at Columbia University

With my major in civil engineering and minor in sustainable engineering, I hope to pursue the intersection of sustainable infrastructure with an emphasis on transportation and construction management. As an engineer, I hope to improve our nation’s deteriorating infrastructure so that we avoid catastrophes such as the I-95 collapse while also promoting sustainable public transportation practices. Furthermore, I come from Bangladesh, a country suffering from persistent traffic congestion and consequent air pollution, road accidents, and even GDP declines. I understand how poor infrastructure practices can deeply inhibit the growth and development of a nation, and I want to contribute to efforts that change that. Transportation development is clearly at the forefront of progress for society, and we still have a long way to go before improving conditions. Of course, effective construction practices are needed to achieve sustainable transportation, and I would like to take on a role as a project engineer to make this possible.

Rouhan Xu

First Year Graduate at Syracuse University

As I transition into my master's degree, my focus will deepen in the structural and materials engineering realm. Multiscale modeling and exploring the properties of biological materials will be at the forefront of my studies, aiming to unravel their intricate structure-mechanics relationship and advance their applications. Additionally, I am committed to enhancing STEM education, integrating research into education, and contributing to community outreach.

Stephanie Heggli- Nonay

Junior at Columbia University School of Engineering & Applied Science

My career goal is to serve in a leading role in an organization where people with different backgrounds and experiences come together to tackle the world’s biggest challenges using technology and engineering. My dream would be to serve as the “conductor” of an orchestra that encompasses “musicians” from different disciplines – civil engineers, economists, consultants, lawyers, etc. Together, we would play in harmony to create and implement integrated solutions. My strong foundation in engineering and technology would allow me to understand how technology-driven approaches add value; but my broader academic foundation in humanities and social sciences would ensure that these solutions are anchored in a realistic understanding of the world.
